You could use a menu overlay to create this effect, but you'd have to make a new one for everny menu, and redo it everytime you changed the menu, I think. Each menu item would have to have the sme over down, active and inactive states (or none at all), too.

hmmm... so when skinning the menu, TLB can only take one image to give to all of the backgrounds of icons
