i notice that truelaunch bar's virtual directory parsing is MUCH slower than window's native explorer or quick launch virtual directories.
all the little extra plugins and features are nice, but what about making the core program faster?
it feels like windows keeps some of the file data in cache or something. it's a lot smoother than tlb. however i hate the way windows taskbar is setup so i'll just wait and hope for improvements.

I have a submenu off my TLB with shortcuts to a bunch of drives and network shares. It takes a good 15 to 20 seconds to open this submenu! Is there any way TLB can be set to not check each shortcut (which I assume is what is taking so long)?

Have you tried turning off background load for virtual folders (in TLB Settings, Other options)? It will have an impact on your initial load time, but after that all your virtual folders should open quickly...
Well, I just noticed that TLB also looks inside zip archives, which can take a long time... It took about 2 minutes to open this folder with a zip file containing 10,000+ files
Could it be that the folder you're trying to open contains one or more big zip files?
I have tried with background loading turned off -- it locks up the entire computer for the same amount of time. No thanks.
My list is of folder and drive shortcuts only. TLB should just display them to me without trying to go into them, etc. It should be instantaneous, like any other menu.
Network drives can also be very slow... At least, here at my system they are

Have you tried right-clicking the items that shouldn't expand, and selecting "Do Not Expand" from the context menu?

I appreciate the suggestions; so far no luck though. Yuri, are you reading this?
Re. expanding, I am not expanding any of the shortcuts. I simply have a menu called "Folders" and inside there are 10 shortcuts (made by right-clicking in Explorer and selecting "new shortcut"). 4 are to network shares and the other 6 are to local drives/folders. I just click on each shortcut and it opens an explorer window at that location. The problem is that it takes FOREVER to open this "Folders" menu!
Note that the delay is only the very first time I access the menu (i.e. each time I login to my machine). I also haven't mentioned that I am running TLB 3.1 on Windows XP SP2.
Thanks again everyone for your time and kindness. Yuri: can you make an option to "not check shortcuts" or something like that? My network is fast, so I am not sure why it takes so long to open this menu. Any help is appreciated.

fyi, the same problem occurs if you have shortcuts to network drives in subfolders you are trying to browse...
This is a problem caused by XP and mapped network drives. This is how you fix it.
