Show Desktop Icon = 5-10 second wait to get to desktop - Darwin - 12-15-2005

I am starting a new thread because I have confirmed this to be a problem with both TBL 3.2 and the beta, 3.2.12. Specifically, when either version is installed, clicking on the "show desktop" icon takes 5 -10 seconds to switch to the desktop. This behaviour occurs when using either QLB or TLB - see below.

Running the default QuickLaunchBar the problem appears gradually, over a couple of hours. At first switching to the desktop is as quick as normal, but is accompanied by a slight flicker. Over time it gets more and more sluggish. Running TLB, though, the sluggishness is evident immediately. I've confirmed this but uninstalling the beta, and rebooting. QLB is fine - the "show desktop" icon takes me to the desktop immediately and continues to do so over a long period of time. I rebooted and then installed the last release (3.2). The sluggishness is there, right after installation (which came almost immediately after a reboot). If I close the TLB and open the QLB, the QLB "show desktop" icon behaves as above - normally, but with a flicker. Over time, this too gets more and more sluggish.

I am running a first generation Centrino notebook with 1024 MB RAM and a 5400 RPM 80 GB HD. OS is WinXP Pro Sp-2 with latest updates applied. I run in Windows Classic Mode with the themes service disabled. I do run the Yahoo Widget Engine with three default widgets - Yahoo Weather, Picture Frame, and the digital clock.

I have same problem on my laptop. Though the desktop computer works fine. On laptop windows is 2 year old on desktop - 2 month.

I'll try to investigate this problem.

Any progress with this? I don't know if this helps at all, but I notice the *exact* same thing occurs when I have the latest beta of Stardock's ObjectBar loaded. When I click on the "show desktop" icon in that apps version of quicklaunch (which is different entirely from the IE version, I think) I experience the same delay.

Sorry no progress yet. One thing you can try: right-click "Show Desktop" and select "Open" from menu. This can be faster a bit. If this helps then right-click Appearance->Button Properties and type:
open
in then "Default command" field.

Thanks Yuri the first suggestion worked so I've applied the second and we'll see if it "sticks". In my experience, the behaviour builds gradually; even if all this does is reset the clock for a bit, I'm happy!

Thanks again,

Mike

BTW, maybe you don't know about standard windows hotkey WIN+D It make same thing as "Show Desktop" but sometimes more quikly.

- Darwin - 01-08-2006

Thanks for the help, Yuri. Win-D is my fallback shortcut. I just find that I always click on the show desktop icon first (old habits).

- Darwin - 01-11-2006

Hi again Yuri,

Interestingly, my "showdesktop" icon gets progressively slower over a couple of hours of up-time. However, I find that if I use your suggestion of opening it via its context menu it "resets" the icon so that it's near instant again (without having reboot) initially, but gets slower over time (again a couple of hours). This works every time - weird!

Thanks,

Mike

Thank yu,Darwin. This is interesting.

Show desktop is slow - Pulsar1 - 02-06-2006

I experienced the same problem recently. I just found out that this was related to Truelaunchbar! Curiously enough, I installed your free product "freelaunchbar" on another computer and for what I can see, I don't have that problem! My desktop appears instantly, like pressing WIN+D. I hope this can can help...

I'm sure all will be ok with TLB too on this computer. I still have no solution Sad

- Yuri Kobets - 02-07-2006

Finally I've found the solution. I've stopped and disabled some services:
Network DDE DSDM
Network DDE
ClipBook

After disabling all become quick Big Grin Also the shortcuts to the folders now opens very quickly.

Let me know if this help you.

I was very hopeful that this suggestion would "do the trick". Sadly, though, I find that I've already got all three disabled.

I'm actually getting quite used to hitting win-d, so not to worry...

Thanks,

Mike

Same with me. Those 3 services were already stopped and disabled.

No improvements. Sorry...

Sad I'll try to find other solution.
