Backup / Restore Issues - CWBillow - 06-03-2007

Every time I've restored my TLB, I end up with all the shortcuts being that "new" kind with no editable path avaiulable.

Microsoft introduced that new version of shortcut somewhere around Microsoft Office 2001 or 2002... I've been given all kinds of explanations why, but it's done nothing but cause my problems.

They are (supposed) to make program access from "anywhere" possible; fact is though, that I always have to re-do them all and revert to the "old" version.

And every time I restore a TLB backup, all the shortcuts ARE this new form, which means the backup is pointless and I have to re-build everything.

Why does this happen?

Can't it be to just back up what you've got the way you've got it, and restore it the same way?

Please.

Chuck Billow

How do you "re-do" the shortcuts?

I know about the problems with these shortcuts without path. Sometimes these shortcuts are restored correctly, sometimes no. More over after updating software shortcuts can become broken. I'll try to investigate this problem and to find the solution.

Currently I recommend to make shortcuts to the MS Office programs manually by drag&drop of exe files. For example MS Word have the executable file named winword.exe

In this case all backups will be restored correctly.

Yuri:

I want to make sure I'm being clear: I really do not like these "new" shortcuts. So I ALWAYS go through and replace them ALL with the "old" ones... Microsoft Office programs and all others as well.

Once this is all done, I back up my TLB settings etc. But if I restore from that backup, most if not all of my shortcuts will be the "new" type -- totally unusable.

I really hope you find a solution for this, as it is the one issue I have with TLB, and otherwise tabulous product.

Yuri:

I went back to several backups... many were screwed up, but ALL wee NOT... so there's got to0 be something strange in the backup process...

Maybe it should just zip the files?

Chuck
