There isn't an official GMail API. At the rate that Mail Monitor is updated I don't think I'd want to be waiting for an update to MM every time google changes the way GMail works.
However MM only does POP at the moment, not IMAP so if it could do IMAP that would be all you'd need. A special "GMail IMAP" mode that displayed things more in the way the GMail interface does would be nice though.
Since I've moved to Vista with it's start menu search I'm only using True Launch Bar to run Mail Monitor, I don't have any other icons/menus on it. If there was a standalone version of Mail Monitor that had a "Gmail IMAP" mode I'd pay for it.

Supports POP3, IMAP (including GMail, AOL, AIM, Netscape, FastMail, etc), SMTP, GMail, Hotmail\MSN\LiveMail, Yahoo, Mail.com, MyWay, Excite, Lycos.com, RediffMail, Juno, NetZero.
Nice notification of new mail. You can open/save attachments. Doesn't have Junk Filters yet, however.
