Gmail and Mail Monitor Plug Trick - csindone - 11-10-2004

Don't know how useful this will be for most, but I wanted to have an easy way to check and be notified of Gmail. My solution was Mail Monitor v 1.10 Beta and a free tool called FreePOPS.

Mail Monitor v1.10 Beta can de downloaded as an update or from this link <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://download.truelaunchbar.com/install/tlbmailmon.exe">http://download.truelaunchbar.com/insta ... ailmon.exe</a><!-- m -->

The webiste for FreePOPS is <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.freepops.org/en/">http://www.freepops.org/en/</a><!-- m --> you can download the newest version for many OS's.

The newest release of FreePOPS has many modules for different types of webmail, Gmail is only one of them.

The installation of FreePOPS is simple, just download and install. I opted to have it run as a service so it would start with Windows.

Once it is running the only thing left is to setup Mail Monitor.

I created a mail account called Gmail

On the Incoming Server tab here are my settings:

Incoming server(POP3): localhost
Server Port: 2000
Username: <!-- e --><a href="mailto:username@gmail.com">username@gmail.com</a><!-- e --> (use your own <!-- e --><a href="mailto:username@gmail.com">username@gmail.com</a><!-- e -->)
Password: gmail password (use your Gmail password)
Authentication: Regular(Plain text password)

If all you are doing is checking mail and running it web-based then there are no settings for the Outgoing Server tab.

To make it more friendly I added this to the General Options tab:

Mail reader: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://gmail.google.com/">http://gmail.google.com/</a><!-- m -->

I set Mail Monitor to check for new mail every minute. Now when I have new email in my Gmail I get a nice sound(added a wav in Mail Monitor options), the Icon goes into action and then changes to alert me. When I click on the Mail Monitor icon I go right to my Gmail inbox...

Nice idea but soon Gmail will support POP access automatically so freepops will not be needed.

Read abot it here : <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/software/gmail-enables-pop-for-some-025387.php">http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/software ... 025387.php</a><!-- m -->

Defeats the object of Mail Monitor being able to do the job, though.
