i voted for 48, but i do not use icons anymore, all my buttons are skinned which are 50x32 so if they are 48 high,
i can just add two more rows of pixels, n i'm good

Voted 32. I'm using 32x32 for my main toolbar, which I think nicely balances desktop space vs. visibility (even though I have a dual monitor setup. yeah, shoot me for wanting even more desktop space
)... of course visibility is relative, since I don't have many eyesight problems...
