Disable Start Menu without disabling hotkeys?

For others who might run into this...

There is a Windows Meta Key combo I wasn't aware of (or forgot):

Meta + D = Show Desktop

Runs the Show Desktop command which minimizes all your applications and shows the toolbar WITHOUT the Start menu.

I'm not crazy about the key combo but it's better than nothing.
