Well, just after I made my original post I was fiddling around with some TLB settings, and found that I got my spacer lines restored if I set Menu Appearance > Menu Options > Titles align: to Centre (it was previously set to Left).
That means that I have my temporary workaround, and of course it also helps point to the nature of the bug that is involved. I hope this report will be found helpful.
