I would like some of my TLB menus to present all my applications as large 'tablets' in the form of the Metro look of Windows 8 etc.

Even a simple list would be nice, so long as it displays the full application names

Customise Menu appears to give me that facility - the Sizes tab providing the means of specifying the minimum and maximum menu widths and heights.

But these don't seem to work with my setup.

Presumably there's a setup that does work?

The attachments show the first part of one of my menus. How can I make the boxes wider so that the full application names show? They appear to have a fixed width, and a maximum of 9 columns, even though this doesn't fill my screen

The maximum width of the items in Icons View mode can be changed in TLB Settings->Menu->Sizes. Look the attached screenshot:
Small icons max. width: is for small icons (like on your screenshot)
Large icons max. width: is for large icons

Also attached screenshots to show how the Control Panel Menu looks with default settings and with "Small icons max. width" = 300.
