Another possibility is this: How much RAM do you have and how much is being used? Also does your display card have on-board RAM or does it use system RAM? Perhaps you are using so much memory your system has insufficient memory left to properly display certain things.
You can try to close all unnecessary programmes and then hopefully you will have freed some memory to try and see if you are still getting this problem.
