You may wish to look into an additional idea although it may not help this immediate problem (but it may). Microsoft has never released a Service Pack for Windows 98SE but somone has created one and it should be looked at - at least. When we used to use 98SE we tried it and it worked quite well. You can find it here.

As always consider backing up everything first but again - we had no problems using this update package.

Hallo,

thanks for your hint, but I already installed this unofficial service pack for Win98SE about one week ago (I installed the German version from http://www.nandlstadt.com/win98sp because I have a German Windows 98SE).

It seems that I have some dlls on my system which are "too new", which means they are originally from Win2000 or WinXP (or from this unofficial service pack with combines all the MS patches for Win98SE ?), but my system IS stabile. Windows 98SE is the only OS I have and had on my PC so I don't know where I got these newer dlls from. I have installed several freeware and some shareware programs and everything is working fine. So I don't want to replace all the new dlls with the old versions which I may find in the cab files of my Windows 98SE-CD.
