Wow, I think I've put all the necessary information in the topic title and description...
(Edit: Unfortunately this post is probably in the wrong location, I keep forgetting about that separate plugin section. Please move the post if possible)
In System Monitor properties, choose the <default skin>. Notice that all colors are set to black and all checkboxes are cleared... so choose your colors and the preview will change. Now press OK, and the System Monitor will only have black lines with a green CPU bar. In properties window, all colors are set to black again and the checkboxes cleared.
