So why add it into the common area??? Auto-sensing only switches on programs that are running or active AND listed in the "working programs dialog"........correct?

Yes. But Common area can be used to disable switching while you activate one of "common" program.

Simply example: You are working in Word. And you need to caculate something on win Calculator. You are running calc and TLB switch workspace. Yes you can add calc into workspace with Word. But you are using calc with PowerPoint with IE etc. and you cannot add calc into all that workspaces. So to disable switching you need add calc into common programs.
