Explorer crashing when opening video files (TLB 3.2.4)

I've had the same problem since installing 3.2.4 -- would like to disable DEP if that's what'll fix things, but where is this setting?

Well I have disabled dep with no success. So this is not the cause. The only thing that works on my end is for me to use software like explorerxp to view folders with movies. I have done more research though and found that it is due to the divx codec. Which is telling me that divx don't care about there customers since they make a fortune. So I'm gonna contact divx and get them to fix this error without contacting microsoft directly. As far as tlb goes the only reason that explorer don't crash in movie folders without tlb running is due to the fact that explorer isn't reading to much info at one time. Exploer under sp2 adds extra garbage to common task for avi files and other movie files so we know the resloution and bitrate. This info needs to be read from the movie so explorer tries to read the whole movie file. In which it crashes cause it is to much info to process due to tlb running on the taskbar. There is ways to disable this feature though but causes other problems. Best bet though is for all people to complain to divx makers about the problem so they can fix this error. If no success contact microsoft and report divx.com about inproper coding. But in the meantime use exploerxp or any other exploer replacement.

It still crashes after disabling DEP for Explorer.exe in my Virtual PC.

DEP - Data Execution Prevention
The new feature of Windows XP SP2. To get access to this feature:
1) right-click My Computer and open "Properties"
2) Click "Advanced" tab
3) In the "Performance" group click "Settings" button
4) Click the last tab "Data Execution Prevention"

sdennis91 What version of DivX do you use?
WilliamWey version 3.2.4 can be incompatible with VirtualPC.

Tried this, but it didn't work -- looks like a tricky setting to play around with, wish there was a way to just shut it off completely.

Have found that if I turn off TLB, the problem clears up, but only after a reboot. The same files that crashed the system before play fine through explorer...

i don't have DEP cause i'm on SP1 so i don't think that is the problem.
i don't use WindowsBlinds either.

I don't see how DEP or DivX could be the problem, after all there is not an issue with version TLB 3.2 it is only later builds than that, that introduce the problem :cry:

Well, I do not reproduced the bug with videofiles but I've found some bugs in code that can cause error and TLB lock up. During some days I've release new version.

HI. Yuri I use divx version 5.2.1 which is the newest version. I am blaming this due to the fact that now my system crashes on video's even withtout tlb 3.2.4. But the odd case is with tlb 3.2.4 I have no problems what so ever with this version as of yet but have with older builds. I have also noticed that a few files pertaining to the vb6 pack are involved with this odd exploer crash. Strange thing though i didn't install vb6 since i don't need anything that ask for visual basic's runtime files. I just wonder if this is caused by microsoft's antispyware program conflicting with antivirus scanners when it try's to access an avi video. Makes sense considering you have explorer, antivirus and a spyware program scanning the same file at a given time for infomation. This may have caused the crash to vanish when yuri has disabled dep. But for us who tried to disable dep with no success is due to the fact that we may have other software running that adds a context menu item when accessing certian files. I'm still researching for a cause to report to microsoft.

Hi. I have found the cause of the problem. The problem is with a codec installer changing the clsid's in the registry. The one that it changes is {c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590} under the hkey_classes_root. It adds a few extra extensions for video files for thumbnail view. However I am looking to find a fix to get rid of the extra extensions that it adds. In the meantime if you get shellexview and disable the key mentioned above it fixes the crash and you can now open the folder to play the movies. Just won't have the thumbnails. I'll keep all updated here as I find more info about this crash so keep checking back.

This decoder is not compatable with media player 9 or 10. The file is called gplmpgdec.ax with a version of 0.1.2.0. If you uninstall this decoder then everything works fine. Even thumbnails of movies. This is a dvd decoder that comes from dvd santa. It's not needed as there are a lot of other dvd decoders around that actually work. Hope this helps everyone out that has been having such a problem.

Well this may be true for you but that codec is not present on my system and I have never used dvdsanta or other third party codecs. :roll:

I had installed 3.2.5 in my computer. This bug was be fixed.

How did this crash get fixed in tlb 3.2.5 if tlb was not the cause. seems pretty odd to me especially since i contacted microsoft about this problem and they emailed me stating that it is infact tlb. Also was told that it was dep which wasn't the case either. I found it to be divx which a lot have according to the divx site. Yet all along it was infact a bug in tlb and I've noticed it before and made post of exploer crashing due to tlb and no one else had it until 3.2.4. oh well I'm glad this problem was fixed. We can all view thumbs of movies again. Maybe this time I can actually set tlb up the way i want it to be set up. Thanks everyone.
