There seems to be a bug with Mail Monitor (Version 2.0) where double-clicking on the icon for Mail Monitor occasionally crashes Explorer.

It's got to be such a nuisance that I've given up using Mail Monitor, which is a pity because I find it quite useful.

Is anyone else having the same problem? I'm getting the same problem on two different Toshiba laptops both running XP (Libretto U100 and Tecra M5).

What happens is, I click or double-click on the icon and Mail Monitor appears but almost immediately the desktop disappears. Usually Explorer then reloads itself. Event Properties shows Event 1002 with the description 'The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted'.

It seems to happen roughly 10% of the time but it's hard to quantify. Sometimes it happens several times in succession but then stops happening until I've almost forgotten about it; then wham, another crash.

Other notes:
1. The icon is in a TLB toolbar.
2. I've not set up any message Filtering.
3. It works fine in all other respects.
4. Operating system is Windows XP SP2 fully patched.

Sorry I can't pin it down more accurately, but happy to try any tests.

Regards,
David Tong.

In the Event Viewer you can find one more event Level: Error, Source: Application Error. With the text something like:

Code:
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.6000.16549, time stamp 0x46d230c5, faulting module MSVCR80.dll, version 8.0.50727.762, time stamp 0x45712238, exception code 0xc000000d, fault offset 0x00008a8c, process id 0x33c8, application start time 0x01c823cba9c09750.

Please can you send me the text of this event.[/code]

The Explorer crashes that prompted me to post the original message were on 12/11/07 and happened when I clicked on the Mail Monitor icon. However the only entries in Event Viewer/Application for these events were of type 'Information' with source 'Winlogon' and Event type '1002'. The message in the Description field was 'The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted'.

I've trawled back through Event Viewer/Application on both machines looking for examples of 'faulting application explorer.exe' and which seem to be definitely associated with Mail Monitor.

All I could find were 5 examples on U100 where the 'faulting module' is mailmon.dll. These happened on the 25/07/2007, 17/07/2007, 14/07/2007, 11/07/2007, and 09/07/2007. (The log goes back as far as 15/12/06).

The entries are all identical except for the date and time. However I think they may be connected with the previous version of Mail Monitor because the log refers to mailmon.dll version 1.20.0.0 and if I search for mailmon.dll now it doesn’t show up. (Unfortunately I can't remember when I updated MailMon to version 2.0 but I think it was in July).

Anyway I've copied the most recent entry below in case it helps:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 25/07/2007
Time: 06:57:51
User: N/A
Computer: U100
Description:
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module mailmon.dll, version 1.20.0.0, fault address 0x0002647f.

Yuri,

After some careful testing today I think the problem occurs when I double-click on the Mail Monitor icon. Opening MM with a single click seems not to cause the crash.

If the timing of the double-click is just right then two instances of MM try to open (unsucessfully) and Explorer crashes.

The pdf in the zip file describes exactly what happened together with screen shots, and the txt file is from the dump report that went to Microsoft. Hoping this helps you to find a fix...

David Tong.
