Latest Components Manager works well but the latest System Monitor is questionable. In this screenshot you see in the upper center the SYSMON 2.4 DK System Monitor set at 500 ms. The upper right has SYSMON 2.4 Flat SysMon (Large) v2 set at 500 ms also. Lower picture is SysInternals Process Explorer 8.40. All three show a different CPU usage. Is one of them correct? We do not know.

CPU usage is statistic based value. It highly depend of time of start and this time is defferent for all.

Hmm, what's the latest version of System Monitor now? Two days ago, I installed System Monitor 2.3. Now when I use the Component Manager, I don't get any updates. Did you increase the version number? ???

This sentence is a bit vague: "Select for installation not installed components"... But I must admit I don't know how to put it more clearly... You might want to inverse the function of the checkbox (in order to lose the 'not' ) and label it "Only select (updates for) installed components"...

I see you added a 'Ask (do not select)' option... so I assume that 'Ignore' and 'Install x version' do not notify the user, but just hide the update, and skip or install it in the background... With this added option, that seems very reasonable... Smile

Awaiting more plugin updates to test this nice utility, I've already overwritten the 'old' tlbupd.exe :p

Try now, I've fixed this.

As we continue to use the two System Monitor plugins side by side for experimentation we note that the CPU usage in the one and the other is remarkably different. As this is being typed one shows 16-24% and the other shows 11-13% usage. This is a big mystery. They do not show the same values.

A possible reason for the different readouts on the two system monitors is shown in the image below. Even while both plugins are set at the same interval, they will use different values because they don't refresh at exactly the same moment.

The green graph shows the 'actual' CPU usage (sampled at high rate)... the plugin will probably show only the single value that is at the beginning of each interval, but in this case even averaging the entire dataset would give different values...

I also believe Windows 98 is also a bit less accurate when it comes to CPU usage... it often seems to rise and fall randomly...

Can't think of anything else, and it doesn't explain the crash Wink

At first that is exactly what we thought, too. (BTW - Excellent graphics, thank you for that! ) If we just leave the computer alone and do not even touch the mouse the one reads a different range than the other.

While this is being typed we tried another experiment that actually solves the mystery! We set the update time to 2000 ms and observed the readout. The ranges still varied quite a bit. Hmmm. Then we put the setting at 100 ms and all becomes very clear now. We see that one is about 700 ms behind the other in its parsing of the values.

For anyone using the System Monitor plugin - be sure to experiment with the Update time value to find what works best for your particular setup. The System Monitor works perfectly and we are happy with it!

Thank you Yuri and Dracula

QSection - Delete this post only - Error
Yuri - I do not understand this post ???

We accidentally posted two times and there is no option on this forum to delete one's own post.

Yuri - And can you tell when you get this error with system monitor?

This only happened one time and there were many applications running at the same time so we believe 98SE and our Pentium II could not handle the load so something crashed. If it happens again (which we do not believe it shall) we will inform you what was running. Smile
