how make toolbars not disappear after choice - toolbars disappear too soon

After I make a choice from a toolbar, the whole toolbar disappears, and I must call it up again and again navigate to where I was, if I want to make another nearby selection. I want the menus to stay on the screen and not disappear. Please advise.
